Chicago Man Gives Ultimate Gift to Valentine, His Kidney

February 15, 2012  |

Yesterday, while couples were going on romantic dates and having candlelight dinners, Terry Lee was sharing the ultimate gift with his girlfriend of two years: his kidney.

About four months into Terry’s relationship with his girlfriend, Trisha Beckwith, she was diagnosed with lupus. The disease began attacking her kidneys and Trisha went on dialysis which took such a heavy toll on her that she began losing her hair and eventually quit her job to move in with her mother in Florence, AL. At the time, Trisha assumed that would be the end of her relationship with Terry.

“I didn’t want him to see me when I was sick, but he was insistent,” she told the Tennessean. “He came to Alabama and I let him see my bald head. I can’t believe he stuck around.”

Trisha was told she needed a transplant, and after her family members were ruled out due to high blood pressure, Terry stepped in to the rescue and was miraculously a perfect match. After settling on Vanderbilt University Medical Center, which does about 200 kidney transplants per year, the couple had to pick a date. December and January were booked and when they were told Tuesdays and Thursdays were the only available days in February, the couple chose Valentine’s Day.

For Terry, he said the decision to donate to Trisha was a no-brainer.

“The way I measure love is this: If you take the person out of the equation, and don’t like the way your life looks without them, you are probably in love.

“The decision was easy. I care about her, love her, and want her to live a normal life.”

Thanks to him she’ll have that chance.
