This year the blazer is getting a much needed makeover. Basic black and navy – while classic – are sooooo predictable. Bright colors and prints update this wardrobe staple in a way that’s refreshingly unexpected. Designers like Emilio Pucci and Matthew Williamson set the tone with their Spring and Resort 2012 collections. Thus, the statement blazer was born! The eye-catching nature of this outerwear calls for more subdued pairings, but risks with color and print-on-print instances are allowed – even encouraged.

Check out these blazers in various styles for every budget and suggestions on what to wear with them. Go on, blaze the fashionable trail!

*Purchase Coral Blazer by Nasty Gal here and Cheetah Print Blazer by Tibi here.

On Edge Blazer, Nasty Gal – $68

Electric cobalt will light up your life!  The longer lapels of this blazer resemble a tuxedo and the structured shoulders are an edgy touch. If you’re daring enough, some printed pants (like the leopard pair above) would work or try a black tunic with black tights for a chill look. Motorcycle boots work in either instance. With black as your base, feel free to go bold with accessories. A chunky necklace and bracelets will have you looking like a rock star!

Floral Blazer, Urban Outfitters – $79

This elbow-length blazer is a definite Valentine’s Day contender! Red and purple floral print gives it that air of romanticism. The flowers appear a bit blurred, which makes this blazer look more like walking work of art.  Toss it on over a fitted dress in a bold color. Red is an easy choice, but you can still keep it bold and sweet with winter white. Simple heels in a neutral color will finish the ensemble nicely. Got a hot date or dinner with friends? Now you’ve got the perfect look.

Classic Blazer, Forever 21 – $24.80

It doesn’t get much hotter than this pink! This classic blazer would look fly paired with a tan chiffon blouse (similar to the one pictured above) and slim grey trousers. As for shoes, gold spiked loafers would continue the menswear feel, but a pair of high heels would add a feminine lift. As a finishing touch, roll up the sleeves of the blazer to reveal crisp satin, then pile on the bracelets!  Work it!

Maryellen Lightweight Blazer, Missguided – $20.52

Lightweight. Three-quater length sleeves. Boxy shape. These cool details set this leopard blazer apart from others with the same print. Layer it over a creme blouse – long enough to cover the booty – and keep the bottoms simple and slim. Cigarette pants and jeans are good choices, but you can really punch it up with maroon leather leggings. Keep jewelry to a minimum, a collar necklace is all you need. Finish with riding boots for a casual spin, or towering black heels to bring the Hot! Congrats, you’re the cat’s meow!

Sheer Lace Jacket, ASOS – $80.57

This blazer is a breath of fresh air! Sea foam green and all-over lace detailing prove that making a “statement” doesn’t have to be so “loud.” Pair with a crisp white blouse and a flared black leather skirt to get the leather and lace look. Add dark tights and high heels for a dressier vibe. Dark blue jeans and black patent leather oxfords will keep things casual and chic. Passersby will be green with envy!

Butterfly Woven Blazer, Forever 21 – $32.80

This one gives us butterflies! Rock this black based blazer covered in the colorful insect with simple separates. We imagine this piece being paired with a bright fuchsia top and black jeans. Black pointy-toe boots with a short heel are both cute and functional! It’s easy to look fly with this one!

NY Collection Jacket, Draped Blazer, Macy’s – $54

This blazer will set your passion for fashion ablaze! The draped front and asymmetrical hem (it’s shorter in the back) are fun details! As a safe bet, pair this blazer with an all black outfit. To add some spice, try a bandage dress in a contrasting color. A bright blue would look amazing! Go even further and rock a high heel in a similar color like purple. Sounds out there, but it will definitely make a statement! And that’s kind of the point, right?

Amara Jacket Southwest, Whitney Eve – $225

This print is so fun! Take a risk and use all the colors in this blazer as inspiration for the other pieces to pair with it. A light denim shirt, black polka dot sheer leggings, and deep brown boots with a medium heel will look cool. Some funky earrings, like deep purple feathers and multiple small rings work well with this look. Have fun mixing prints!

Bright Ponte Blazer, GAP – $79.95

If you’re bold enough to rock this lime green blazer, then grab you’re sunglasses because you’re fashion future is bright! Hitting perfectly at the hip, this two-button classic cut is perfection. Pair such a bold statement with a floral shirt and jeans for a funky fresh look. Or, keep the blazer the focus with a simple top and skirt in neutral colors. Keep the shoes – flats or wedges – simple as well with both looks. A cocktail ring and small stud earrings top things off. Hope you’re ready for the limelight!

Snowdrop Pyjama Jacket, Topshop – $80

Stressed? Picture this: the night is lit with snow as it falls between a tree of small flowers. Can’t picture it? Doesn’t matter because now you can walk around with this scenic scene printed on a blazer. It’s pjama-inspired and includes a belt to tie at the waist. Wear it as a top and keep comfy with a grey harem pant in a flouncy cotton. Add black booties or wedges for a chic twist. Long gold earrings will bring just enough shine. Comfort has never been more chic!
