Fan Denies Racism After Throwing Banana at Black Hockey Player

January 10, 2012  |

A Red Wings fan has either seen one too many cartoons characters slip on bananas or he’s just a racist butthole. During a National Hockey League match in Ontario last night, Christopher Moorhouse threw a banana at Philadelphia Flyers forward Wayne Simmonds, who happens to be black, while he was trying to score against Detroit. Moorhouse was fined $200 for his conduct, but he swears up and down throwing a banana at Simmonds had nothing to do with the fact that he’s black.

“He was horrified when he saw the implications a day later as to how it had come out,” says Moorhouse’s lawyer Faisal Joseph. “He said to me, ‘If I had an apple or an orange, I would have thrown that out onto the ice.'”

Meanwhile, Simmonds isn’t sure what to make of the incident:

“I don’t know if it had anything to do with the fact I’m black. I certainly hope not. When you’re black, you kind of expect [racist] things. You learn to deal with it.”

Moorhouse is lucky a $200 fine is all he has to deal with. If police officials didn’t believe he was merely trying to stop Simmonds from scoring, he could have been charged with a more serious offense or even a hate crime. According to police chief Brad Duncan, Moorhouse’s actions didn’t fit the criteria.

“You have to demonstrate and be motivated by hatred. Although the banana did hit the ice, it did not interfere with the play so it didn’t meet the mischief threshold.”

Lucky break. What do you think? Were Moorhouse’s actions racially motivated or is he just another die-hard, no-common-sense-having hockey fan?
