2011 was an eventful year in hairstyles to say the least! We saw lots of eye-catching dos, some of which made us go gaga, and the others? Well, ya know. Nevertheless, we’re going to round up the year that just passed on a positive note by chronicling of some of the year’s most fab hairdos. Time to see what worked and what styles deserves to make it into 2012.

January’s gal was…

January 2011 – Bria Murphy dazzled in her asymmetrical low cut at a Dark and Lovely event in NYC where she was announced as their new Global Brand Ambassador. The look is choppy and fun, and frames the face wonderfully. This is a look that definitely gets a pass for the new year! Just make sure you get some ear muffs for this cold weather so you don’t flatten this fab style.

February 2011 – Solange Knowles arrived at the Gucci and RocNation Pre-GRAMMY Brunch in show-stopping style with her thigh-length braids. These box braids were all the rage this past year as ladies used them to gain length with their own locks and just to look fashionable and different.  I’m thinking some smaller and shorter braids will probably take the place of these babies this year, however, I wouldn’t be surprised if I saw someone in box braids right now trying to protect their locks. Whatever works!

March 2011 – Jill Scott explored her wild side with this funky fresh do while filming the video for her single “Shame” in Philadelphia. Big, bountiful wigs and weaves are pretty timeless at this point, so we expect to see a lot of sistahs to still be strolling around with these voluminous curls–just don’t go overboard with the volume!

April 2011 – Rihanna took a step away from her more vibrant red color with a chic burgundy pixie in this shot that appeared in the April issue of Vogue. Short cuts have made a huge comeback lately, so I’m sure the cut will still reign in 2012. However, take Ri’s lead and leave behind clown-like reds for more subtle and warm shades that still have a way of standing out.

May 2011 – Ciara showed up feeling summery with highlights that added more dimension to her dark locks for the screening of  The Hangover 2 in May. Once Mother Nature gets her act together, these light and lovely highlights will probably be back big time, as well as ombre two-tone looks. Will you be rocking a style like this sometime this year?

June 2011 – Beyoncé rocked the stage and surprised a crowd of children in luscious big hair at Target’s one-year anniversary celebration in Harlem. The color and the curls are “ca-UTE” for sure with this neat version of Jilly from Philly’s look above. And as was stated before, big hair is always in, and warm luscious shades like her golden brown-meets-blonde look are a big hit with women these days searching for a new color. Looking to get out of dark brown? Try giving your hair some spark with a color like Bey’s.

July 2011 – Sanaa Lathan hit the red carpet for Ella Moss’ 10-year anniversary celebration with a classic high bun that completed her look. A style doesn’t get called classic if it isn’t fab enough to stay popular for a long time. Keep pulling that hair up and knotting it in this look that looks great day or night.

August 2011 – Erykah Badu let it all hang gorgeously at the Outside Lands Music Festival in San Francisco. As with Solange’s braids from February, length was a big deal last year, and these “naturally” looking straight extensions are such a breath of fresh air and hair, we hope they’ll make a return on bold heads when the weather gets warmer. Are you a fan of this style?

September 2011 – Eva looked ever so radiant in her fan-favorite lovely brown pixie at the Kari Feinstein Primetime Emmy Awards style lounge. The color was the perfect one to enter fall with, as was the timeless cut, and we have our fingers crossed that the look will be repeated in 2012. Don’t underestimate the fun and power of a uber-short and chic cut.

October 2011 – The paps spotted Keri Hilson on the streets of NYC sporting this bleached blonde bob that added a pop of color to her getup. Love this look on her! Especially since this bob seems to have an asymmetrical aspect to it. The choppy bang look might need to take a break in 2012, but the rest of the cut needs to get in some overtime for this new year.

November 2011 – Chanel Iman graced the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show after party in ombre loose waves that were pulled back for an elegant finish. Ditch the french roll! We’ve found a perfect new updo for you to try for special events. Loose but still neat, this style is classy and sure to make “waves” in 2012. Right?

December 2011 – A glamorous Jennifer Hudson hit the stage with her cascading side-swept mane at VH1’s “Divas Celebrates Soul” show. Loose romantic curls with length are going to be hot for a while, but let’s try this style this year with a spark of color!

What hairdo made you go gaga in 2011? Which will you try out and bring back to life this year?
