Diva-licious and Disastrous Outfits from VH1 DIVAS Celebrates Soul
Who tuned in to Monday night’s showing of VH1 DIVAS Celebrate Soul? We’ve commented on some of the red carpet looks, but the real show-stopping ensembles could be seen during the performances. And the fashions – much like the performances – were hit and miss. It wasn’t for lack of trying, but some of the looks took center stage and other’s we wished would exit stage left. Click ‘Next’ to peep some of the best and few of the worst performance outfits of the night…
Jennifer Hudson is not playing with us! She found the right bra and poured her curves into this bedazzled stunner by celeb favorite, The Blonds. Her tousled hair looked lovely cascading down one shoulder and her hot pink lips popped! To finish the look, those jeweled strappy heels looked more suited for a high school prom, but they still work because they didn’t take away from the dress. LOVE!
Love Marsha Ambrosius, but don’t care for this outfit. Maybe I’m a hater like Jan from the Brady Bunch, but I just don’t see what’s so great about this look on Marsha! Marsha! Marsha! The blue velvet blazer, graphic tee, cropped leather pants and black booties remind me of an outfit a concert goer would wear, not a concert performer. It’s not bad, it’s just BOR-ING! Divas are expected to be above average and this was just disappointing. At least she still has that amazing voice…
Ok, technically, Lala Anthony did not perform, but she did grace the stage (and the red carpet) as an announcer in this LaQuan Smith mullet dress. Mullet dresses can either look really good or really bad. There is no in-between. This chic long sleeve houndstooth print and simple black train push this design into the ‘really good’ category. Don’t even get me started on those Hot heels! Lala does it again…
I dig Martha Reeves as much as the next gal, but this choice of outfit was poor. I appreciate the idea behind it, but that piano dress needs some fine tuning. With a dress that tight, even the skinniest woman could benefit from some kind of spanx-like undergarment. Ms. Reeves could have used a little streamlining and some adjusting of those wayward spaghetti straps. The accessories weren’t anything to write home about either. Whoever styled this one has added Martha Reeves to their ‘chain of fools.’ At least, vocally, she held her own.
Mary J. Blige
You better wear that white after Labor Day Mary J. Blige! I like to call this one ‘winter white done right.’ Even though her cups runneth over, this dress fits Ms. Blige perfectly. Her sleek blonde bob goes great with the retro vibe this dress is emitting. Just looking at it makes me feel more glamourous. One can only imagine how Mary J feels in it! I suspect, Diva-licious!
Ledisi is pictured her with Sharon Jones – who’s serving us some fierce fringe in her own right – but Ledisi’s look is more modern. The gold and black frock is very feminine and lets her shine like the diva she is! I dont’ even mind the tribute to Charlie Brown’s classic shirt design hanging out at the bottom of her dress. That thin leather jacket and her peep-toe pumps compliment this look well. Her beautiful locks have somehow molded into a huge pompadour atop her head, but it works beautifully. Ledisi is working like the rent it due!
Jessie J is known for her over-the-top outfits, but this colorful, fringe-tastic number was hard to ignore. I had to add this one to the best section! This picture alone shows how dynamic the outfit was and (most importantly) how well it photographs. Her signature short black bob and bold lip look great with this ensemble. Those black combat boots and thigh-highs add an unexpected twist to the look. Cutouts. Fringe. Color. This has all the fixings of one diva-licious outfit!
Erykah Badu is one of those artists that can get away with wearing almost anything. I mean, really, who else can rock floral leggings, a black draping top, paired with a large gold necklace – that looks more like a shield – and top it all off with a top-knotted do-rag? Classic Erykah. On anyone else I would probably hate it, but on her it just looks right. Now, that’s a true diva!
