How to choose a good home

My first apartment was, now that I think about it, kind of in a scary neighborhood. But nobody told me to look at more than just the cost. Nobody told me, either, to look for a rent-controlled apartment, because any place that seemed too-well-priced-to-be-true would raise my rent drastically after one year. Nobody told me the importance of a place that comes with a parking spot.
