Even though John Legend and Kanye West have collaborated on some of the best songs and albums in the past two decades, Legend doesn’t consider the “Jesus Is King” gospel rapper a “close friend.”

John is very politically involved and outspoken, particularly when it comes to the treasonous and immoral behavior of Donald Trump, so it’s not far-fetched to think Ye’s unfounded support of #45 would ruffle his feathers.

“I’m not trying to disown Kanye because I still love him and love everything we’ve done together creatively, but we were never the closest of friends,” John told Vanity Fair in a recent cover story featuring his family.

Continuing with his disdain for Trump, “He’s locking kids in cages and he’s a terrible human being…’

The father of two reached out to Ye in private last year when “The College Dropout” first started openly supporting the MAGA platform to be contrarian. Ye shared the text exchange between him and John on social media, telling his followers,

“I really appreciate this dialogue with John Legend because I’m actually very empathetic. I’m still the kid from the telethon. I feel when people think of MAGA they don’t think of empathy. I tweeted the John text to show that there are people around me that disagree with me and voice their opinion. I respect everyone’s opinion but I stand my ground.”

The EGOT told Vanity Fair that their political differences have caused a rift between him and Ye.

“I think what was always challenging about it was Kanye has never been political. I don’t think he knows one way or another what policies of Trump’s he likes. He’s just kind of embraced Trump’s blow-it-all-up spirit and the energy of himself being countercultural in supporting him.”

Legend’s wife, model Chrissy Teigen added that even though Kim and Ye’s work with prison reform is meaningful, it still doesn’t justify doing a deal with the devil.

“To be able to go in there and put whatever you hate about him aside to do this greater good for this person? I  don’t know if I could physically muster that smile and handshake,” Teigen explained.

It’s a cheap win for [Trump],” Legend added.

“But the people being granted clemency are real people with families. So even if the clemency is won through his celebrity-whore tendencies, it’s still helpful for that family and that person. At the same time, he’s locking kids in cages and he’s a terrible human being….”
