President and CEO of Icon Management Inc.
Kimberly Holland was studying law at Regent University School of Law when her brother-in-law, an Olympic medalist, asked her to help to manage his career. She said yes, one client became many — and Icon Management was born. Holland now represents a number elite track and field athletes, including Olympians Angelo Taylor, LaShawn Merritt, Shawn Crawford, William Clay, Oludamola Osayomi and Moushaumi Robinson.
She told Madame Noire, “When I first started in this industry, it was super challenging, not just as a woman but also as an African American woman. And I was one of the youngest agents at the time. I don’t believe the other male agents, meeting directors or the booking managers took me seriously. Later on, they realized that I had staying power. They said, “she is articulate, educated, she can defend herself, she knows what she’s doing and at the end of the day she really cares about her clients.”
Before becoming a sports manager and CEO, the D.C. native had plans to become a lawyer and worked for a few years as a foreign policy assistant under senator Edward Kennedy. Now, Holland uses her law degree to broker deals from brands, negotiate fees for competing in sports events and client appearances.
She says, “Go with God, go with grace, go with your passion, and watch how God will bless you more than you can imagine — I’m a living testimony of that.”
