Chief Diversity & Inclusion Officer of the Atlanta Hawks & State Farm Arena
Diversity and inclusion are major buzzwords for many companies, but Nzinga Shaw is ensuring that the NBA actually follows through as Chief Diversity & Inclusion Officer of the Atlanta Hawks & State Farm Arena. The Brooklyn native spent 10 years in human resources with the NBA, NHL, MBL before becoming the first person in history to hold her current role in 2014. She is responsible for advancing diversity and inclusion in every facet of the Atlanta Hawks and Philips Arena organization, specifically as it relates to age, race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, national origin, disability status and veteran status. Because of Shaw’s commitment to this role, the Hawks team is an active participant in the Atlanta Pride parade and implements engagement with the local LGBT and Latinx communities.
Shaw’s passion for ensuring diversity in the workplace did not begin with the NBA. She was the Senior Vice President, Diversity & Inclusion Officer at Edelman, one of the largest public relations companies in the world. She also worked in human resources at Essence Magazine, the Yankees Entertainment & Sports Network, and the National Football League. She is an alumna of Spelman College, the University of Pennsylvania, and was a study abroad scholar at Oxford University in the United Kingdom. She serves as a member of the NBA’s Executive Committee to provide guidance to the leadership team on creating an inclusive workplace that provides opportunity for team growth.
