The curse of self-consciousness is one that only human beings suffer. In many ways, it’s why we experience so many of the beautiful things we do, like recognizing personal growth and stopping to appreciate just how fortunate we are to be alive. Animals don’t really do any of that. Sure, they think about survival, but they don’t stop and ruminate on the beauty of the planet and how meaningful their relationships are. Of course, self-consciousness has its downsides. Even if you aren’t an over-thinker, anyone who is simply conscious and has a base level of intelligence is bound to suffer the frightening thoughts and feelings that plague most people. The good news is, if you have these fears and insecurities, you aren’t alone. They’re actually so common.
