Rep. Ilhan Omar Files For Divorce From Husband Ahmed Hirsi
On Friday freshman congresswoman Ilhan Omar filed for divorce from her husband Ahmed Hirsi, whom she shares three children with, TMZ reports. Omar filed the documents in her home state of Minnesota.
Hirsi and Omar will reportedly be splitting for the second time. The couple initially married during a religious ceremony in 2002, but split in 2008. During their first union, they had two children. According to TMZ, their first marriage ceremony was not recognized legally.
After the couple parted ways Omar married Ahmed Elmi, a British citizen, in 2009. Two years later, the couple split with Elmi relocating back to the United Kingdom. The two didn’t legally divorce until 2017, TMZ reports. Between her split with Elmi, Omar and Hirsi rekindled their connection. In 2012, they welcomed their third child.
Hirsi and Omar held a legal wedding ceremony in 2018, marking their renewal of love.
The usually boisterous congresswoman has not yet made a public statement in regards to the breakup of her marriage, as it is a very personal matter with children involved. Omar has reportedly moved out of the marital home into a penthouse apartment in Minneapolis where she resides, and where her congressional district is located.
Over the course of the past year since she was elected to office, Omar has raised her national profile by speaking out in regards to America’s history of racism and inequality. It has made her a target of many conservative voices and figureheads, including Donald Trump. Omar, along with four other freshman congresswomen, Rep. Rashida Tlaib, Rep. Ayanna Pressley and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, make up a group of outspoken leaders called “The Squad,” who routinely push their fellow lawmakers to consider progressive ideals, while also advocating for a fairer and equal America.
