Macy’s Retail Boot Camp Gives Minorities and Women a Boost

(Crain’s) — Unable to find flattering clothing that fit, Monif Clarke started a business six years ago selling stylish plus-size dresses and swimsuits on the Web and through specialty boutiques.  She longed to land an account at a major department store for her Manhattan-based company, but with about $585,000 in annual sales and four employees, Monif C. Plus Sizes just did not have the critical mass.  That’s why Ms. Clarke was thrilled to be selected as one of 22 participants in The Workshop at Macy’s, a vendor-development program for women- and minority-owned businesses that the chain launched last month. Entrepreneurs attended a four-and-a-half-day boot camp aimed at teaching them all they need to know about getting their merchandise onto Macy’s shelves.
