Sasheer Zamata And Kym Whitley Are Every Black Mother And Daughter In The Weekend
Imagine spending a weekend with your ex who you’re still not over, his new girlfriend, a new guy you kinda like (but kinda don’t because you’re still not over your ex), and your mama. Sounds like hell right? Well, that’s exactly the type of hilarious hell Sasheer Zamata finds herself in in The Weekend, which hits theaters this Friday.
Zamata, who plays Zadie, invites her old boo Bradford (Tone Bell) to her mom’s country B&B trying, unsuccessfully, to be friends with him three years after their split, but when he brings his girl Margo (Dewanda Wise) things get super awkward. And not just for Zadie, because she learns Bradford is still holding on to feelings for her too, which come out when she starts eyeing fellow vacationer (and cutie) Aubrey (Y’lan Noel).
Of course, the headache starts for Zadie long before that drama goes down because her mom Karen, played by the hilarious Kym Whitley, is already putting pressure on her. Not long after she arrives, we see her and her mom go at it, with Karen telling her daughter, “I just wish someone would marry you so I can quit worrying about you.” What woman over the age of 25 hasn’t heard that before?
Check out the sneak peek scene of Zadie and her mom in the clip below and catch The Weekend in theaters September 13.
