Perhaps you’re too young to remember a time before Oprah. Even for those well beyond the quarter-century mark she has a ubiquity that defies a beginning, much less an end. But Wednesday The Oprah Winfrey Show comes to a close. Rather than be sad, we court a bit of sacrilege and nominate a few people to take her place. Chris Rock leads the names you know well. For Farai Chideya and others this may serve as an introduction unless you’re a newshound. If you have nominees be sure to add them in the comments, for with a whole network to run, Oprah’s surely open to suggestions.
Can you use more Chris Rock in your life? Sure you can. Hilarious and insightful, he should be available in prescription strength. Oprah knows this better than anyone; outside of her expert franchise no other man has appeared as much as Rock. Headlining his own show has been tried before. After three seasons it was cancelled, but not before locking down an Emmy. He kept it moving and eleven years on, as he works through his first Broadway role, the press tells us he’s matured. Cool, let’s pass him the mic.
