Cook Co. Mortgage Program Saves Hundreds of Homes
(Chicago Sun Times) — Like the 1,800 homeowners who obtained help from Cook County when sued for foreclosure, Blanca Lopez got into trouble after she lost her job. The mother of four also was getting divorced and was desperate enough to pay an attorney to renegotiate the mortgage on the Tinley Park townhome where her family had lived for a decade. Then she found free legal services and counseling through the Mortgage Foreclosure Mediation Program offered through the Cook County Circuit Court. The Cook County Board learned Wednesday in a report that the multimillion-dollar program helped 216 people, a third of its participants, keep their homes since it began in April 2010.
