Aretha Franklin Left Behind Almost $1 Million In Uncashed Checks
Aretha Franklin left behind more than just a collection of classic music. The Queen of Soul also had almost $1 million in uncashed checks, Billboard reports.
After inventory of her assets was done, it was found that she had an uncashed check in the amount of 702,711.90 from Sound Exchange and the Screen Writers Guild and $285,944.27 from publishing companies like Springtime Publishing, BMI, EMI, Carlin Music and Feel Good Films. Altogether, she left behind $988,656.17.
Her estate was going to be divided in between her four sons when they thought she didn’t have a will. They were surprised when they found two different wills, one from 2010 and another from 2014. If the wills are ruled to be valid it will change how her assets are distributed amongst her children. Each of her sons have their own legal teams regarding the matter.
Her son Kecalf’s has expressed thatvhebisnt happy with his cousin’s, Sabrina Owen’s, work as the representative of his mother’s estate.
“It is totally unacceptable that it has taken a year for the heirs to begin find out what their mother owned on the date of her death,” his lawyers Charlene Glover-Hogan and Juanita Gavin Hughses wrote in legal documents. “To date, the heirs still do not know what was owned on Aretha Franklin’s date of death.”
Kecalf reportedly wants Owens sanctioned if she doesn’t produce more financial statements like Franklin’s tax bills, appraisals of her cars and homes and bank statements.
