Ghana branded 2019 the “Year Of The Return,” a travel initiative that encourages anyone belonging to the diaspora to come home to the continent of Africa.
This year marks 400 years since the first enslaved Africans arrived in Virginia, so many stars are making the pilgrimage back to the motherland to reconnect with their roots.
Steve Harvey and his wife Marjorie made an emotional visit to the Elmina Slave castles in Ghana. This spot marks the last time many Africans saw their homeland for the last time.
“This was real pain I felt going back to Ghana’s slave castles…I could feel my ancestors on me… Powerful beyond words that I can explain. I encourage as many of you as possible to go HOME for your ancestors. Their strength is in each of us and we must honor their ultimate sacrifice in all that we do,” Harvey captioned an Instagram video of his experiences.
Steve was also overwhelmed by the love he received after he exited the castle.
“Leaving out of the Cape Coast Slave Castles there was a group of brothers waiting to meet me… They showed me so much love… Thank you for that welcome back home Soldiers. #TheYearofTheReturn #Ghana.” he said.
