Chris Rock To Host CNN News Program? We Sure Hope So
by Selam Aster
Maybe the fact that newsrooms are getting less diverse have something to do with CNN recruiting all the colorful newscasters. Jokes aside, word on the street is that Chris Rock is being courted to host a primetime show on the news network that already boasts more than five African-American anchors. If CNN were to secure Rock, a long-term ratings boost would be as good as done. Look at what Joy Behar’s show has done for Headline News – the comedian and The View co-host has infused a much-need mix of wit and intelligence to the evening news lineup.
Would anyone contest that Chris Rock is one of the funniest, smartest, with-it, analytical comedians of our time?
Honestly, as good as it sounds, CNN’s hopes are probably out there to generate buzz for their search for an African-American news host. Even with their diverse news team, they’re still falling behind in terms of African-American viewers with MSNBC ranking higher among Blacks.
Rock certainly doesn’t need the gig but we’d hope he’d consider. It’d be nice to hear his interpretations of the headlines more often than every two years.
