Give Her All Her Things: Missy Elliott Will Finally Receive The Video Vanguard Award At The VMA’s This Year
Music legend Missy Elliott will receive the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at this year’s VMA’s, Variety reports.
The singer, rapper and producer will be honored at the award’s show for her accomplishments in both video and audio on August 26th. This will be the first time Elliot performed at the VMAs in almost two decades.
“Missy’s impact on the music landscape is indelible,” Bruce Gillmer, MTV International co-brand head and Viacom music and music talent head told Variety.
“Her creative vision across production, performance and songwriting is unmatched.”
This is the latest in a string of awards/honors for the Virginia native. Back in May, Missy received an honorary doctorate from Berklee’s College of Music. During her moving speech, she told the soon-to-be grads:
“There will be ups and downs—prepare for that. As long as you are breathing, it is never too late. Don’t forget that. You have come too far to quit.”
In June, Missy made history as she was inducted into the Songwriters Hall Of Fame back in June.
“I am thankful,” Missy said, at the time. “Every time I come up to a podium, even with all the work that I’ve done, I don’t know, and I’m assuming it’s just God, I don’t know why I am here,” she said as she held back tears. “I want to say one thing to the writers, to the upcoming writers, ‘Do not give up.’ We all go through writer’s block. Sometimes you just have to walk away from a record and come back to it. But don’t give up because I’m standing here. And this is big for hip-hop, too.”
Jennifer Lopez received the Vanguard Award last year–Pink, Rihanna and Kanye West have received it in the past.
The award show will air on MTV at 8pm on August 26th in Newark, New Jersey.
