“Are You Going To Go Back To Nordstrom And Sell Some More Clothes?”: Karrueche Tran On Upgrading Her Life After After Chris Brown
It’s hard to find someone who has had a greater come-up after a breakup than Karrueche Tran. Sure, quite a few women have glowed up, found true love or had more career success, but the 31-year-old literally did all of that. Tran built a respectable acting career, nabbed a starring role on a TV show and even won an Emmy for producing in the years after she parted from Chris Brown. She also met her romantic match and got in the best shape of her life. Granted, the Claws star can admit that the results have been “amazing!” but she admits the journey to this point wasn’t the smoothest.
“It was hard,” she told D.L. Hughley while visiting his radio show recently. “It was very hard and I came to a point in my life where I was just like, this has happened, it is what it is, what are you going to do? Are you going to go back to Nordstrom and sell some more clothes to D.L. [Hughley]? No! I’m tired of that, alright?! [laughs]”
“I just had to pull through and somehow believe in myself and see the bigger picture and know that there was a light at the end of the tunnel.” she added. “But in the thick of that was tough.”
It was particularly rough because she was dealing with heartbreak along with some serious public scrutiny due to the fact that had been with a celebrity who has rabid fans. It also didn’t help that she gave everything to that relationship and didn’t know what to do with herself after the fact.
“As humans, being in a relationship is hard enough as it is, but it being publicized, and it being on such a huge platform, for everybody to see — I unfortunately during periods of that time, I didn’t present myself in the best way because I didn’t love myself, because I didn’t put myself first,” she said. “I was too busy with the riff-raff and this and catering to other people that I didn’t take care of me. I wasn’t focused, I wasn’t career-driven. I looked crazy. I didn’t look like this. I didn’t. I was stressed, I wasn’t working out, I wasn’t drinking water.”
She was also a young woman trying to figure out who she was and what she wanted for herself with a fish-eye lens on her life. Once she asked herself what else was out there for her, she decided to go after them.
“I was young and I was in my early 20s. I was maturing and growing and this is what my story was in front of the entire world to see so I was in the midst of all that, trying to figure out this relationship thing, trying to figure out life, trying to figure out how to navigate the public life,” she said. “What else am I going to do with myself other than this relationship or this portrayal of me? It was a lot.”
Thankfully, she figured it out. Claws is still going strong, she’s got movies on her plate and Tran is in the healthiest relationship she’s ever been in with beau Victor Cruz. She’s literally living her best life after years of people saying she would be nothing without her ex. Talk about using your haters as your motivators.
