The September issue is undoubtedly the most coveted issue for models and celebrities. It’s one thing to be on a magazine cover, it’s a different level to be on the cover of the September issue. Model Adut Akech Bior has three September issues under her belt for 2019, all from Vogue none the less. Is this their new “it” model?

The September issue tends to be the biggest ad issue of the year for publications and was further popularized by R.J. Culter’s 2009 documentary. The New York Times writer Alexandra Jacobs explained the importance to Who What Wear, “Even after one outgrows Seventeen and its ilk, a September issue signals ‘back to school.’ Autumn is the time of important cultural happenings, of re-engaging with the outside world and the intellect, after the sanctioned mindlessness and insularity of summer. So I always welcome its commanding thwap in my mailbox.”

September issues look like mini fashion bibles and is when magazine’s like to do something “different.” For Vogue, they are leaning into the power, beauty, and intrigue of dark skin women, by featuring model Adut Akech Bior on not one, but three of their international covers.

Adut Akech Bior is one of the 15 women chosen by The Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, for the September issue of British Vogue. While the cover received criticism for allegedly copying another Black woman’s work, it still shined light on populations that normally don’t get featured, including dark skin Black women, trans women, and more.

Bior’s second Vogue cover for September, is for Vogue Japan and also coincides with their 20th anniversary. The model is posed in a profile shot where she is wearing a off the shoulder architectural sequin dress and black head band; however, it’s her melanin that’s the star.

Vogue Japan posted a photo of the main cover to their Instagram, showing six models. I was so happy to see that there was another dark skin Black model, Anok Yai (who was the second Black model to ever open a Prada runway show) on the cover again. I love that both the women have their natural, short afros. Anok is also on the cover of the September issue of Vogue Brasil alongside model Alton Mason. Vogue is undoubtedly betting on Black for September and we’re with it!

Bior took to Instagram to celebrate her “THIRD Vogue cover this week for September Issues!!!” The beauty is the cover star for Vogue Germany and is wearing a gorgeous green Givenchy suit with pale pink button down and matching chain belt. Just HAUTE! Bior shared her gratitude, stating, “Thank you so much to everyone that made this possible, and those worked on this shoot on and offset, thank you for a dreamm come true. I couldn’t imagine a better way to end my week!!”

What do you think of all these dark skin Black models scoring Vogue covers overseas? Would you like to see the same occurring stateside as well? Sound off in our comment section.
