Hip Hop Gets No Respect at the Grammys
(TheLoop21) — In December, I wrote about how I refuse to be fooled by the Grammys anymore. For years, they’ve used the same tactics to bamboozle viewers: promote Hip-Hop leading up to the event as if it were truly a respected part of the awards show, then almost totally ignore the genre when the show starts. If you go back to that December article, you’ll see that I pretty much articulated what would happen last night: So this year, I expect to see an awards show highlighted by an epic Eminem performance and a dramatic set by Kanye West only to see Em win a few Rap awards and Album of the Year go to Lady Antebellum.
Kanye wasn’t there, and Lady Antebellum didn’t win Album of the Year, but they pretty much swept the rest of the awards. And Hip-Hop again was given the middle finger. My accurate prediction doesn’t mean that I’m some sort of soothsayer. It simply means that the Grammys are getting predictable with its transgressions.Jay-Z, who’s been known to miss Grammys in the past, was absent this year. He’s cited the Grammys lack of respect for Hip-Hop as the main reason he hasn’t attended. Somebody must have clued him in to what was going to happen this year because, despite the fact he took home three awards, Jay would not have been pleased with what he saw.
