How many times has this happened to you? You wash your face only to wake up in the morning to makeup-stained pillows. Or, perhaps you think your face is clean, only to have dried mascara still flaking off the next day. The truth is that many of our facial cleansers simply don’t stand up to the test of makeup. Especially with all the long-wear, stay-all-day, 24-hour products on the market, it’s difficult to know if every trace of your makeup is truly gone after washing your face at night.

While I still recommend double-cleansing—which is washing with an oil-based cleanser followed by a water-based cleanser–if you’re a regular makeup-wearer, there are some great one-stop wonders out there that do a pretty good job of removing makeup, dirt, grime, and pollutants on the first go. Click through this gallery to find five facial cleansers that get the job done.

The Olay Sensitive Calming Liquid Cleanser with Hungarian Water Essence ($6.99, is perfect for people like me whose skin is picky with products. The wrong cleanser can have my breaking out or overly dry from harsh ingredients. This cleanser from Olay’s Sensitive Skin line calms my skin with its soap-free and dye-free formula. Essences of aloe and cucumber work to soothe the skin and avoid that post-wash tightness you get from other cleansers. Try this one out if you’re looking for a gentle cleanser to wash away makeup and dirt while leaving the skin calm and hydrated.
