Some people want to be famous just to be famous. Singer and actress Ryan Destiny isn’t one of them. The star of the Fox drama “Star” knows her fame needs to serve a purpose and she’s found it in being an example of beauty and talent for brown-skinned girls.

Sharing with us in an interview that colorism was never apart of her experience until she entered school and then, again, the entertainment industry, Destiny said it soon “became very evident and important to me to be a voice, to be a face because you don’t always see that.”

Starring in a hit show like “Star” — and having 1.7 million followers on Instagram — certainly allows Destiny and, by extension, other brown girls to feel seen. And for the 24-year-old that’s all that matters. “It’s always been very important to me to just be that girl that other people can look up to and so far I’m doing that and it feels really, really good,” she said.
