Chris Rock was told by the NAACP Image Awards producers last night (Mar. 30) that he couldn’t make any jokes about Jussie Smollett and his hate crime scandal. Of course, he didn’t listen. When he arrived to present the award for Outstanding Comedy Series, he had to give his two cents about the disgraced actor’s alleged hoax.
“They said no Jussie Smollett jokes…What a waste of light skin! You know what I could do with that light skin? That curly hair? My career would be out of here. I would be running Hollywood,” he said as the crowd laughed.
The comedy veteran made it clear that his feelings have changed about the Empire actor.
“What the hell was he thinking? You are ‘Jessie’ from now on. You don’t even get the ‘u’ anymore. That ‘u’ is respect. You ain’t getting no respect from me,” he said.
When the cast of black-ish was accepting their award for Outstanding Comedy Series, Yara Shahidi showed support for Smollett.
“I stand with Jussie,” the 19-year-old said. “And we don’t integrate, we recreate.”
The 16 felony charges of disorderly conduct against Smollett were abruptly dropped last week.
Take a look at what Rock had to say below.
