Missy Elliott To Receive Honorary Degree From Berklee College Of Music
Congrats are in order for music legend Missy Elliott. The ‘Get Your Freak On’ genius is set to receive a honorary Doctor of Music degree at Berklee College of Music’s upcoming graduation ceremony, Billboard reports.
The president of the college, Roger H. Brown, will present the degree to Elliott, Justin Timberlake and tony award winning musician Alex Lacamoire.
“I am soooooo HUMBLED!” Missy wrote on Twitter.
Back in January, Missy was inducted into the songwriter’s hall of fame, making history as the first female hip-hop artist to receive the honor. She also is the first solo female artist period to be inducted in 2019. Only two other rappers have received this accolade since it began in 1969.
At the time, Missy took to Twitter to thank her fans and peers for their support.
“I want to CONGRATULATE all the AMAZING songwriters who have been inducted into the 2019 Song Writers Hall of Fame… also those who were nominated because their body of work is AMAZING.”
Niles Rodgers, the Hall of Fame’s chairman, told CBS of Missy’s nod, “To me, it’s important to have equality. I’ve written with a lot of women songwriters, but not nearly enough, and that’s sort of like my secret goal. That’s why when you told me Missy Elliott, I’m like, blown away — she’s one of my favorite writers of all time.”
Back in 2016, Missy acknowledged a lot of people don’t realize just how many songs she has lended her talents to.
“A lot of people don’t know a lot of records that I’ve written or produced, so that’s a highlight for me as a woman,” Elliott said in an interview with Associated Press back in 2016.
“I always said if a man would have done half the records that I’ve done we would know about it. But we don’t know all the records I’ve done for other artists.”
We love to see the industry giving Missy all her things! So well deserved.
