R. Kelly Owes Almost $170,000 In Back Child Support
Besides facing a lengthy prison sentence for 10 charges of criminal sexual abuse, R. Kelly is facing another legal issue. The 52-year-old owes $169,996 in back child support, TMZ reports.
He was found in contempt after slacking off in his payments to his ex-wife Andrea Kelly. It was ruled back in January 2009 that he had to pay $20,833 per month, so it seems that he stopped making payments about nine months ago. A Cook County Judge ruled that if he does not pay up by March 6th, he will be thrown in jail. Since he turned himself in to Chicago police on Friday (Feb. 22), he will still be behind bars if he does not post bail. The “Ignition” singer’s bail was set at $1 million yesterday (Feb. 23).
Kelly’s lawyer Steven Greenberg said he may not be able to post is bail due to not being as wealthy as he once was. Greenberg said Kelly has mismanaged his money and “really doesn’t have any money.” He he has yet to post bail and has spent the night in a Cook County Jail.
“This is someone who should be wealthy,” Greenberg told Page Six. “I don’t think he even owns the rights to ‘I Believe I Can Fly.”
If he can’t post bail, odds are he won’t be coughing up any unpaid child support any time soon.
The nearly $170,000 covers child support costs, however there are other expenses that Kelly has not been paying for his three children. The number skyrockets to $194,045.70 due to interest, education and health care costs.
