Queen Latifah Is Bringing Affordable Housing To Newark, NJ
Queen Latifah is taking a break from the big screen to tackle the housing issue in her hometown of Newark, NJ. According to NJ.com, her company BlueSugar Corporation, which she is the co-president of, is partnering with GonSosa Corporation to invest $14 million in multi-family townhouses.
Within the 20 three-family townhouses there will be 60 units with a rent set at market rate, starting at $1,800 a month. The affordable housing will actually be in a mixed-use building that will also have a fitness center and1,900 square feet of commercial space that will house different non-profits. There will only be 16 affordable units available in that building. The rent will be based on the applicant’s income.
The townhouses will be completed by December 2020 while the affordable units will be finished by 2021.
Spokeswoman for the developers Cristina Pinzon said they are committed to making the lives of Newark residents a bit easier when it comes to finding housing.
“They understand how difficult it is to make ends meet for many residents and want to be part of the solution,” Pinzon said in a statement. “They remain dedicated to making life better in communities like Newark.”
Construction is set to begin this summer.
