Black History Month 2019 has been remarkable, to say the least.

From Trump, to the repeated instances of archaic blackface among Virgina’s leaders, (not to mention one allegation of sexual assault), this week has made everyone yell in their Cardi B voice: “WHAT WAS THE REASON?!!”

But then here comes Fox News commentator Candace Owens. Owens, who serves as the communications director for conservative advocacy group Turning Point, couldn’t help but resist making an asinine and incredibly irresponsible comment during a December Turning Point event in England. The clip was first reported by Buzzfeed News on Friday.

Owens was asked about white nationalism in western politics and this was her response:

“I actually don’t have any problems at all with the word ‘nationalism.’ I think that the definition gets poisoned by elitists that actually want globalism. Globalism is what I don’t want. … Whenever we say ‘nationalism,’ the first thing people think about, at least in America, is Hitler. You know, he was a national socialist, but if Hitler just wanted to make Germany great and have things run well, OK, fine,” she said.

“The problem is that he wanted — he had dreams outside of Germany. He wanted to globalize. He wanted everybody to be German, everybody to be speaking German. Everybody to look a different way. That’s not, to me, that’s not nationalism. In thinking about how we could go bad down the line, I don’t really have an issue with nationalism. I really don’t. I think that it’s OK,” she continued.

To sum it up, it seems that Owens would have been ok with Hitler’s slaughter of Jewish people, had he not formalized his practice to move globally. The optics are very complicated and point to the reality that white supremacy and the idea of white nationalism is colorblind. People within the bounds of marginalization can easily be subjugated to anti-Blackness, or “anti-otherness,” and Owens acting as the mouthpiece of an organization which continually works to work against her own interests as a Black woman, is astounding.

Let’s put it into context. This is the same woman who was one of the main advocates to stand with Kanye West during and after his MAGA rants. She has been highly critical of Black Lives Matter in the past, and once argued that African-Americans have a “victim mentality.” So she is perpetually stuck in the sunken place 24/7, 365 days a year.

Now before all you freedom of speech, “free-thinkers” commerce, to be as educated as she is, Owens sounds ridiculously ignorant. And like a Twitter user pointed out, this is an incredibly stupid hill she chose to die on.
