Destination Heal: A New Podcast Where Grief Has Breathing Space

For those of us who struggle with the pains of grief, the healing process can be an isolating journey. Lifestyle blogger, beauty maven and creative Ty Alexander, (famously known on IG as @gorgeousingrey) is looking to create a tribe of hope, inspiration and love to encourage others to seek community on the road to healing. Her latest venture, Destination Heal, is a vulnerable exploration of Ty’s own grieving process after the passing of her mother. Now, she has opened up her podcast to not only herself, but to those who are seeking the light at the end of the tunnel after the loss of a loved one. MN caught up with Ty to find out what drove her to create the podcast, and her larger plans for the Destination Heal platform.

MN: What inspired you to start the “destination heal” social group and then ultimately the podcast?

TA: I started Destination Heal in 2016. In the beginning, it was just another way for me to sell my first book, “Things I Wish I Knew Before My Mom Died”. My publisher suggested creating a Facebook group where I could continually talk about the book. But the community of women that formed from this was not planned or expected. I would share my struggles with grief, pieces of my book and just everyday life as a Black woman. Other women started sharing their stories. I didn’t realize how much power my vulnerability was giving the ladies. In 2017, I began to take Destination Heal more seriously and wanted to find ways to expand our wellness community. So now we have a website with lots of resources, a self-care retreat, and a podcast.

MN: In what ways have you learned to heal from past trauma and loss?

The biggest lesson I’ve learned from my trauma and my loss is that I am not my circumstances. To me, acknowledging and honoring that one fact is the first step towards truly healing your mind and your soul. Far too often we allow our trauma and loss to mold us in such a way that you forget who you are at the core. I’m human so I have to remind myself daily of the work I am capable of doing despite the things I’ve been through.

MN: How does talking through loss with others who have been through similar things help the mourning process?

There’s one common thing that happens in any traumatic experience. You feel alone. You feel like no one understands what you’re going through. When you share your story with others you not only give others the permission to release their own trauma but you create this authentic human connection that I think our souls need to thrive in a world where you will constantly mourn things and people.

MN: Talk about the upcoming Destination Heal retreat. What is your goal for the trip? 

The goal for our retreat is to help women find the courage to put themselves at the top of their priority list. We are mothers, wives, sisters, friends, CEOs… we are so much to the world and yet at times we are nothing to ourselves. The #SelfCareIRL retreat will give women the tools they need to really harness the healing power that already lives inside of us all.

MN: What do you want people to know about healing?

That it’s more possible than you think. That you are in your own way. That once you acknowledge the “it” that is in the way of your healing you’ve taken the power back from your trauma and then and only then can you begin to heal. And lastly that you are human and you are flawed. The people around you are also flawed. Which ultimately means you will constantly be healing from something. The idea that you will arrive at this magical place and be fully healed is a myth. There is always work to be done. There is always a way to be a better human.
