The site reports that officers and paramedics were called to the actor’s home in San Fernando Valley after friends went to check on him and found him unresponsive. Kristoff was pronounced dead at the scene. While the cause of death isn’t clear at the present time, TMZ reports that police have said there was no sign of foul play, but a separate source claimed alcohol could have been involved.
The actor’s ex-wife, Mia St. John, and mother of their late son, Julian, confirmed his passing on Twitter, seemingly placing blame for Kristoff’s death on the actions of the mental health facility where there son died.
“THAT HOSPITAL KILLED OUR SON @TheArtofJulian THEN MY HUSBAND @kristoffstjohn1 THATS WHAT HAPPENED!” she tweeted early Monday morning before deleting the message. “THEY KILLED MY FAMILY.”
If you’ll recall, Julian took his life in November 2014 while in a mental health facility obtaining treatment for schizophrenia. Kristoff and Mia sued the facility for negligence and their suit ended up being settled.
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight in 2017, when speaking on the neglect of the facility who was supposed to have Julian on suicide watch, Kristoff said the settlement money obtained was used to start a foundation called Knowledge Is Power (or El Sabor es Poder) to battle mental illness. Still, it wasn’t an easy way to end the fight for justice for Julian.
“It feels like blood money, it really does, even though we’re fighting for the cause,” he said. “I can’t go back in time, but certainly, the checks felt very heavy.”
In 2017, Kristoff threatened to take his own life with a gun as the anniversary of his son’s death approached. He was, at the time, put on a 72-hour hold by police so that he could be evaluated. Kristoff took time off from shooting The Young and The Restless in the fall of that year so that he could take care of himself. He returned to the show in March of 2018 to a lot of love from fans, and when he did, called himself “The comeback kid.”
Kristoff had been featured on The Young and The Restless since 1991, winning multiple Emmys for his work. He had three children, including Julian.
