Erykah Badu Gets Booed After Defending R. Kelly At Chicago Concert
R. Kelly has been cancelled by many, but apparently not Erykah Badu.
Badu left fans highly disappointed last night (Jan. 19) at a concert at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago, IL where she allegedly defended the Pied Piper. One fan tweeted that Badu said “What if one of the people who was assaulted by R Kelly becomes an offender? We gonna crucify them too?” Another fan also blasted the Texas songstress on social media saying that she told fans to keep their opinion to themselves because she was going to be a R. Kelly fan regardless. Fans were not pleased, and reportedly responded with booes.
Many entertainers and previous collaborators have written off Kelly after the airing of Lifetime’s Surviving R.Kelly, which detailed his years of preying on underage girls and having sexual relationships with them. Stars like Chance the Rapper, Lady Gaga, Tank, Omarion, Nick Cannon and more have apologized for working with the R. after his 2008 child pornography charges.
The controversial docu-series also started conversations about the black community and their level of concern and respect for black women when people decided to continue to support him despite the numerous allegations and survivors coming forward. After the airing of the first installment of the docu-series, R. Kelly’s Spotify streams increased 16 percent and continued to increase. While fans were still blasting his music, his record label decided to part ways with Kelly. Sony ended R. Kelly’s record deal earlier this month after protests began happening at their offices in Manhattan and Los Angeles.
