Someone Stole Money From Aretha Franklin’s Assets Before She Died
Michigan police are conducting an investigation to find out who stole money from Aretha Franklin during the months before her death. It has been discovered that someone was inappropriately using her funds, leading to a report being filed in June 2018, TMZ reports.
This isn’t the only financial trouble that her estate has had to address since Franklin’s death. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) claims the Queen of Soul still owes $6.3 million in back taxes despite her estate saying that half of the debt has been paid already. She also owes $1.5 million in penalties for the unpaid amount, which is from 2012 to 2018. A lien has also been filed by a publishing company that wants $136,000 in royalties from Franklin’s 1973 track “Angel.”
Despite all of the financial woes, there is some good news. A director has been picked for Franklin’s biopic. Liesl Tommy, a black female director, has been tapped to lead the project. Tommy has directed episodes of Insecure and also earned a Tony nomination for Eclipsed, a Broadway play she wrote that starred Danai Gurira and Lupita Nyong’o.
Franklin passed away on August 16th, 2018 from pancreatic cancer.
