Costume Designer Ruth E. Carter has made quite a name for herself. And while you may not know her name (though you should), she’s dressed some of your favorite stars, including Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Denzel Washington, for their featured films. The 58-year-old style queen is behind some of your favorite movies and shows and has worked on over 40 projects, including Black Panther, Sparkle, Malcolm X and more. Carter is being honored at the 2019 Costume Designers Guild Awards and is set to receive their Career Achievement Award.

Carter had a strong year with Black Panther. Creating over 700 afro-futuristic, technologically advanced costumes for the movie, helped to set the scene and create the visuals for Wakanda and its people. While she’s had many prior successes, this was undoubtedly her largest. While she’s being honored at the event, she also has a nomination for Excellence In Sci-Fi/Fantasy Film for her work on the popular Marvel film. She’s up against Paco Delgado for his work in A Wrinkle In Time as well as Kym Barrett (Aquaman), Jenny Beavan (The Nutcracker And The Four Realms) and Judianna Makovsky (Avengers: Infinity Wars).

She posted to her Twitter account an image asset from the Costume Designers Guild Awards and wrote, “Thanks for the nomination!!!” She’s not new to the award game, holding 2 Academy Award nominations. She’s also been honored in Black media, winning the Career Achievement Award in 2002 from the American Black Film Festival and the 2015 Black Women in Hollywood Award from Essence.

The 21st Annual Costume Designers Guild Awards will take place on February 19th, 2019 in Los Angeles, California. Congratulations to Carter on being honored as well as her nomination! We’re rooting for you!
