Ayanna Pressley Sends Resounding Message To Trump Over Government Shutdown: “Today I Rise As One, And I Stand As Thousands”
Ayanna Presley is wasting no time in her new role as congresswoman to call Trump to task for his outrageous behavior over the government shutdown and the United States – Mexico border wall.
“Mr. Trump, you took an oath just as I did five days ago to protect and defend the constitution and the American people. Sir, you dishonor that oath,” she began. “You devalue the life of the immigrant, the worker, and the survivor. I see right through you, and so do the American people. This has nothing to with border security. Your shutdown and Trump-generated crises has brought a tsunami of hurt to the American people,” she said.
She then pulled out the good queen Maya Angelou to lift her message to the highest heights.
“So today I rise to life the voices of the unread. I rise today on behalf of the families concerned about feeding their holders because their WIC benefits will run dry. I rise today in solidarity with the thousands of workers with callused hands and broken spirits working for no pay,” she said. “I rise today in support of the survivor fleeing violent hands seeking safety only to find the shelter door locked because of your shutdown. I rise today in support of the American people who believe in the promise of this nation and ask for honest pay for an honest day’s work. Today I raise as one, and I stand as thousands,” she concluded.
To date Trump’s refusal to budge on allowed funding for the border wall has caused an estimated 800,000 federal workers to go without pay. Several important programs such as food assistance, low income housing, food safety inspections and several of the national parks and monuments, have been affected by the partial government shutdown.
According to a tweet from Washington Post reporter Mike DeBonis, congressman G.K. Butterfield, who was elected as the second highest ranking individual in congress on Tuesday, asked Pressley to “refrain from engaging in personalities toward the president.”
However, one thing I want to be weary of is placing these newly elected positions on unattainable pedestals. Because as we know, many have been propped up which has in turn caused a lengthy fall once one problematic sound bite or tweet makes its way tot he surface in today’s drag culture.
But it continues to inspire me that the new school of politicians are here to wreck the status quo. And that is the exact change that is needed in today’s stagnant world of government and politics.
