Grown-ish star Yara Shahidi was a favorite on the red carpet and magazine covers in 2018. The 18-year-old shows no signs of stopping in 2019! She is the cover star for the popular website, Who What Wear. There is an article and a video to accompany the editorial which is beautifully shot by Emman Montalvan. She was styled by Jason Bolden, who shared some BTS shots of the actress.

The entire shoot is beautiful, but there were a few special details that were for the culture. Two of the four looks feature black fashion designers. While discussing her style, Shahidi claims, “Fashion is a reclamation of my identity.” So it’s no surprise she included some black fashion in her looks. Above, she’s pictured wearing a Pyer Moss look from the Spring/Summer 2019 RTW collection. I love this look for multiple reasons. One: the hand-drawn paintings are absolutely beautiful and feature unapologetically black faces. Two: the ensemble is unisex. Three: It looks extremely comfortable. Like pajamas…but fashion.

Bolden also shares a shot taken by Shahidi’s mama. In the shot, she’s looking out the window and wearing the Harbison collection by Charlies Harbison. While you can’t see the whole ensemble, this is a color blocked, yellow and cream, knitted jumpsuit. It’s gorgeous.

In her video with Who What Wear, she discusses her style while wearing a Pyer Moss ensemble. She describes her style as “everchanging,” while admitting that her “entire closet actually only consists of tracksuits.” She shows love to her longtime stylist by adding, “everything else you see me in is courtesy of Jason Bolden.”

The one thing we can’t get over is her uber long braids for the shoot! In editorials you see her holding them gently, while in some shots, you see that even when she’s standing, they still are in a braided pile at her feet. In the video, there’s a moment she gets cold and puts on a jacket. Like any black girl, she then proceeds to try and get her braids out from the jacket and she’s pulling for a long time. You can’t help but laugh along with her in the video.

What do you think of the shoot? You can read the editorial and watch the accompanying video, here.
