Serena Williams is a star on the court and also on covers. The 37-year-old mother has landed yet another cover (she ended the year on the cover of Teen Vogue).

This morning, Allure Magazine posted to their Instagram the cover for their Body & Mind issue. The tennis star gives us a profile pose, while wearing French brand Jacquemus. The magazine wrote, “Introducing our cover star, Serena >>insert praise emoji<< Like other goddesses – Athena, Artemis, Oprah – she only needs one name.” Facts.

The interview was conducted by writer Ashley C. Ford, who got to visit with the tennis star in her home. On their walk, Serena revealed how her parents encouraged both her and her sister to love themselves. This undoubtedly translated to the tennis court. She tells Ford, “Venus and I started out being successful, continued to be successful, and we were also unapologetically ourselves. We were not afraid to wear braids. We weren’t afraid to be black in tennis. And that was different.”

One thing I love about this cover and editorial is the hair. Done by celebrity hairstylist (really, hair artist), Vernon Francois, Williams’ hair is styled in a blown out ponytail, still showing the kinky texture ever so slightly. For the editorial shots, she kept the same low ponytail but added a twist. It is effortlessly beautiful.

I also love the subtle focus on hair. In the above editorial shot, it’s the obvious focus, we don’t even see Williams’ face. Just the hair and the exquisite back of her red Ryan Roche dress.

We spoke with Francois, who explained the creative concept behind Williams’ hair. He tells Madame Noire, “Allure, screams clean, simple and effortless and this is what I wanted to achieve with Serena’s hair. We also never get to celebrate our hair textures enough on platforms like this as often as we should be. I wanted to take full advantage of this moment.” And take advantage he did! Even with a simple style, he still made it look like art. Francois has been showing the glory of natural hair beauty on the red carpet and in editorials through his multitude of celebrity clients and never disappoints.

In the article, Williams’ talks a lot about body and beauty. She discusses loving being pregnant and that yes (even for her), it was hard to lose the baby weight. She tells Allure, “I’m feeling pretty good about my body. I worked hard at it in the past eight months to get back from the baby. It hasn’t been easy. I’m not 21 anymore. But I did it slow and steady.” Williams’ has spoken very candidly and openly about her pregnancy, especially when she almost died post-C-section because doctors’ were not listening to her.

In my opinion, this is one of her best interviews and editorials. It’s definitely a must read. Check it out and see all the images, here.
