Tip 1: Keep the rest of your makeup very simple. When you’re rocking a lippie that’s out of the ordinary, the lips should be the star of the show. Keeping your eye and face makeup on the more neutral side allows the lips to really be the focal point without competing for attention or making you look like a clown.

Tip 2: Line your lips before applying your lippie! The key to pulling off any bold lip color is precise application. You want the color to remain only within the lines of your lip, without bleeding or feathering beyond your mouth. It may be difficult to find lip liners in quirky colors, so try an eyeliner pencil like the Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil ($21.00, sephora.com) for a wide collection of color options. Whether you’re rocking a purple, blue, green, or gold, you’re bound to find a liner that works! Once you’ve lined your lips, apply your lipstick. For a cool range of colors with a great formula, try Fenty Beauty’s Mattemoiselle Plush Matte Lipstick ($18.00, sephora.com). Try “Clapback” for a dope, denim-like blue or “Midnight Wasabi” for a mossy green. Go with “Ya Dig?!” for a lighter periwinkle blue or “One Of The Boyz” for a lilac purple.

Tip 3: Set your lipstick in place with a matching colored eyeshadow. As we know, cream formula lipsticks tend to move around or wear off as we go about our day. We eat, drink, talk, and our lippies tend to disappear especially near the center of the lip. This is never cute, but it’s especially unflattering when you’re wearing an out-of-the-box color. No one wants a ring of green around their lips. To avoid this, set your lipstick in place by patting a corresponding colored eyeshadow over top. Not only will this keep your lippie from sliding around or wearing off, but it will also intensify the color and finish of your lipstick for a super bold look.

Tip 4: Clean up the perimeter of your lips with concealer. Use a concealer that spreads easily, like the Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer ($30.00, sephora.com). This trick will allow you to “erase” any bumps or mistakes, or areas where you might have accidentally overdrawn your lips. For extra precision, use a lip brush like the e.l.f. Cosmetics Retractable Lip Brush ($3.00, target.com).

Tip 5: Rock your lippie with confidence! Finally, you cannot walk out of the house with blue lips and a sorry walk. Strut with your head up and don’t be afraid of what others might think. The more confidence you show, the more you’ll pull this look off. I promise, if you show some confidence, you’ll have women asking you “what’s on your lips?” all day long!
