Lena Waithe: Kevin Hart Didn’t Understand Ramifciations Of His Words, Oscars Should Hire Black, Gay Host
I think Kevin Hart thought that a simple sit down with Ellen would absolve him of all his sins with the LGBTQ community. But Hart miscalculated…again. His comments were directed toward gay [rich] White women. His audience is Black folk. And with the particular brand of homophobia we experience and perpetuate in our community, his comments meant something different to Black members of LGBTQ community. And Ellen doesn’t often speak for that group of people.
Since Kevin’s sit down, Black folk who expected, wanted and deserved more have spoken out. Including CNN”s Don Lemon. On his show, Lemon reminded Hart and the rest of us that addressing an issue and apologizing for it is not the same thing. He said that since Hart’s tweets, the way to show that he was in support of the gay community, would have been championing their causes, speaking out on the injustices that affect the community, etc. But Kevin Hart is not and has not been about that life.
This past weekend, during the Golden Globes, Variety asked Lena Waithe, another Black member of the community, what she thought of Hart hosting the Oscars and his past homophobic comments, she said this:
“I think we got to make this a teachable moment. We can’t get mad about having to apologize for wrongdoing. We should stand firm in what we did and try to challenge everybody else not to do that kind of thing anymore. That’s what I think needs to happen.”
When asked what she thought about his decision to sit down with Ellen, Waithe said, “I only saw clips of it. I think people are frustrated but I think the truth is we have to make sure that the gay community is no longer the butt of the joke.”
Variety asked whether or not Waithe had reached out to Hart. “No, I haven’t but I’ve met him a couple of times. I don’t think he even understood the ramifications of what he said. But I do think this has to be a teachable moment for all of us.”
Waithe offered some thoughts on who should host the Oscars this year.
“I don’t know [if Hart should host the Oscars] I think it’s a matter of what he does next. I’ll be curious to see what happens. I like the idea of having a really gay ass, Black person host it.
Variety: Like Lena Waithe.
“Lena ain’t ready for it. But Wanda would be amazing. What better way to rebel.”
Agreed. Give Black women, particularly marginalized ones all of the things.
