Octavia Spencer presented at the 2019 Golden Globes Awards. The former award winner stunned with soft curls cascading to her shoulders and a middle part. Celebrity hairstylist, David Stanwell, told Madame Noire, “Octavia wanted something effortless, yet still glamorous.”

We’re going to show you how to recreate Spencer’s red carpet hair in 5 easy steps. Stanwell revealed, “Keeping it simple with a few great products like these is all you need for great hair. Sometimes simple is the most effective.”

We agree!

You will want to start with clean hair. To prep the hair and make it easier to shape and style, Stanwell used Dove Style + Care Curls Defining Mousse ($4.89, Target.com). If you have natural hair, try Cantu Wave Whip Curling Mousse ($5.89, Target.com). This mousse will leave your curls touchably soft!

Now it’s time to curl the hair. Before you start, you are going to want to use a heat protection spray so you don’t fry your hair and cause heat damage. No matter your hair texture, you can use Madam CJ Walker Silkening Blow Out Creme ($26.00, QVC.com), it’s a heat protectant that also has shea butters to leave your hair moisturized. Celebrity stylist David Stanwell used Dove Style + Care Smooth & Shine Heat Protection Spray ($4.99, Target.com). He used a 1 1/4″ curling iron and parted the hair in sections to curl. He provided a pro-tip to achieve this effortless glam: “Curling away from the face allows for an open and effortless wave.” This method truly helps to shape Spencer’s face. Stanwell excitedly added, “You can just run your hands through and it bounces right back!”

After curling the hair, Stanwell added the Dove Style + Care Compressed Micro Mist Flexible Hold Hairspray ($4.89, Target.com) to give it extra staying power. He admits, “I like to spray through her hair before using my hands to break up the curls for that effortless and luxurious look.” We’re here for it!

Afterward, he flipped her hair upside down “to make sure her hair was full of body and volume.” To finish the look, he used Dove Style + Care Compressed Micro Mist Extra Hold Hairspray ($4.49, Target.com). If you have natural hair and make sure that your hair doesn’t revert, finish off with Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray ($10.00, Moroccanoil.com). This hairspray has a medium hold so your hair will remain in place but still respond to wind and movement.
