Melyssa Ford been body goals for a long time for many women who witnessed her showing rapper Mystikal exactly what she was working with as a video vixen in “Shake It Fast” as well as Jay-Z and UGK’s “Big Pimpin”. Ford grew in her career and showed the world she equally brought business savvy and beauty to the table while building her career as a realtor on the Bravo reality show Blood, Sweat and Heels. Earlier, this summer, fans feared for Ford’s life after learning the hip-hop video icon had been severely injured in a car crash involving a collision with an 18-wheeler that caused her vehicle to flip several times and resulted in Ford suffering from a fractured skull. A seat belt apparently saved her life but friends such as model Claudia Jordan shared details of the ordeal on social media to convey the severity of the situation:

It’s a shame I have to do this to let folks know the seriousness of @melyssaford ‘s accident (I got her permission first) but here it is. She was involved in a horrific accident that could have easily taken her life. It’s actually a miracle she survived. She’s injured FOR REAL. She doesn’t even remember this as she has a huge gash in her head and blood on the brain. This was sent to me by a Good Samaritan that didn’t know who he was helping but once he saw the story online he contacted me knowing we’re friends and he was following me. If anyone was a witness to this accident please inbox me any information you may have. As you can imagine Melyssa doesn’t remember much so I’m hoping witnesses will come forward and assist in putting the pieces back together. She was hit by an 18 wheeler. Respect to @manifesting_mary who was the first one to check folks for the poor taste “jokes”. The internet emboldens cowards… it also can shut em down as well. Everyone please send love and prayers to our friend @melyssaford 🙌🏾🙏🏽

The Canadian-born beauty has since been in recovery and very candid about sharing her progress with fans. For a #FitnessFriday Instagram post, the 42-year-old shared that she’s finding her way back to health and wellness through exercise, although it hasn’t been easy:

“And so begins my Journey… back to health and wellness through fitness. My journey back to a stronger sense of who I am, the hard task of staving off depression through mental and physical challenges.”

She also shared that although it’s difficult to adjust the limitations placed on her due to the accident, the prayers and well wishes of fans have helps her to push through:

“I’m not 100% yet: my coordination is still off; I fall down a lot. My pain levels are through the roof. I’m existing in a body that’s a little foreign to me. I don’t know HOW to be injured. But I’m trying. And all of you, who have rooted for me, prayed for me and cheered me on…”

Ford has been extremely transparent about how the crash and recovery have affected her not just physically, but mentally as well. She has spoken openly about dealing with depression as well as survivors’ guilt but also growth and transformation that has resulted from a new outlook on life.

I’m battling Depression. Crushing, malignant Depression. It was always there; it’s just been made a little worse because of the head trauma from the crash. There are days where simple tasks takes the effort of 40 men; mornings where I’m unhappy to wake and see the sun because it’s another day spent listlessly looking for solid meaning in life. The guilt I feel at having survived and not feeling constant gratitude is a heavy weight to bear. I’m trying to jump back into my life but it feels like there are two Me’s: Before and After the crash. And I barely know who Before Me is anymore. Trying to seek help feels like drowning in a strong current with a lifeline swinging right above your head. I say all this to say check in with your ‘strongest friend’… no one ever does.

#tbt I’m normally a pretty private person but if you don’t celebrate your own victories, why would anyone else? This was a month after the crash that almost took my life. I needed to support of a walker from the symptoms of post concussive syndrome. My speech And cognition was affected, I was constantly disoriented and I was scared. But what ended up happening over the next few months of recovery was intense self discovery: things that no longer fit within the realm of who I was or what I could accept or be a part of. Certain relationships fell apart due to the glaring fact that, at my worst moment, ppl I loved and would have done anything for couldn’t seem to muster the same energy for me and made excuses for their lacking. You live and you learn I guess 🤷🏽‍♀️Now that I’m better, my energy will be focused on projects and endeavors that are more reflective of the real me… at the helm of my own ship, charting my own course. Thank you to everyone who has cheered me on and rooted for and prayed for me.
