(New York Times) — It was the start of the 1981 season, and the New York Jets rookie, Michel J. Faulkner, was unlucky enough to be assigned a locker next to that of Mark Gastineau, a superstar.  It was not that Mr. Faulkner disliked Mr. Gastineau; it was his teammate’s fan mail that the rookie had a distaste for. Much of it came from shameless female fans who sent lusty letters and Polaroid photographs of themselves in the nude.  By then Mr. Faulkner, who had been an All-American at Virginia Tech, was a born-again Christian and had been celibate for a year.
