This $10 Highlighter Is The Only Glow You Need This Holiday Season
Over the years, I’ve tried my fair share of highlighters. From liquids to creams and powders, I’ve tried it all in my search for the perfect glow. My first love was MAC cult-favorite, “Soft & Gentle” Mineralize Skinfinish ($34.00, ulta.com). Over the years, however, I found that the pearl-peachy finish was on the light side for my caramel skin. I’ve come to realize that for many women of color like myself and darker, golden-hued highlighters are the most flattering.
With my go-to now collecting dust in my makeup drawer, the search was on for a new favorite highlighter. Sick of my complaining, a friend and co-worker put me on to the Maybelline FaceStudio Master Chrome Metallic Highlighter ($9.99, Maybelline.com). After trying the shade “100 Molten Gold,” I knew I had found my winner.
The glow speaks for itself, but I’ll go ahead and rave, anyway. First off—the color. “Molten Gold” is the perfect champagne-gold color to suit my yellow undertones. Many highlighters are too frosty, and tend to show up quite ashy on black skin. The gold in the Maybelline highlighter compliments my skin tone instead of competing with it.
Even better than the shade, in my opinion, is the formula. I love my glow to have a natural, “from within” type of vibe. Maybelline’s Master Chrome applies like a buttery powder and delivers an even sheen, rather than a dusting of glitter particles all over the face. This was my problem with the infamous “Trophy Wife” Killawatt Freestyle Highlighter from Fenty Beauty ($34.00, Sephora.com). Glitter-highlighters tend to be less forgiving on textured areas of the skin—for example, where you might have wrinkles or acne—and actually attract more attention to those areas. Master Chrome’s formula allows the glow to blend in seamlessly with my other makeup without sitting awkwardly or obnoxiously on top of my face. That being said, “Molten Gold” can certainly be built up for a see-me-from-outer-space level glow. The best part of all? It’s only 10 bucks. You need it in your life, now.
