Blasphemy! Disney Working On ‘Sister Act 3’…Without Whoopi Goldberg
You may remember a certain favorite movie franchise of 90’s kids where Whoopi Goldberg goes from “Deloris”, a Las Vegas lounge singer to “Sister Mary Clarence” when she is placed at a nunnery under the witness protection program after witnessing her mob boss boyfriend commit murder. If you weren’t interested in the original Sister Act for Whoopi, you may have at least tuned in for Sister Act 2: Back In The Habit in which we saw a young Lauryn Hill bless us with the glorious sounds of “Joyful, Joyful”.
Entertainment Weekly reports that almost 25 years later, Disney has plans to resurrect the story of a raunchy soul singer who finds something to believe in with Sister Act 3. The movie is scheduled to be released through an upcoming streaming service.
Plot details are currently in development, but Regina Hicks, an executive producer of HBO’s Insecure, and Karen Gist, showrunner for Fox’s Star will combine their creative talents for the film, but according to sources it will not be a continuation of the original movie. In addition, Whoopi Goldberg won’t be involved. A representative of the actress and co-host of The View stated, Whoopi would have no parts in the latest installment:
“It is our understanding that this is not a continuation and Whoopi is not involved.”
I’m already leery of all of these remakes, but this the idea of doing a remix without referencing the original story or including the original star already sounds like Jesus should be taking the wheel and putting the whole production in park. Some sites have mentioned that Tiffany Haddish seems like the perfect actress to tap for the project, but something tells me we might have to pray for some divine intervention that the film isn’t a total flop.
