CFDA designer and fashion trailblazer Christian Siriano launched People Are People, a unisex fragrance with a political message of social equality and inclusivity. The former Project Runway contestant announced the release on his Instagram with a striking promotional image, featuring a diverse group of people spanning different races, genders, ages, religions, and sexual orientations. Amongst the group were familiar faces such as Whoopi Goldberg and Danielle Brooks, a longtime fan and public face of Siriano’s work.

Unique both in design and purpose, People Are People is a refreshing departure from the unimaginative fragrance ads we’re used to. There are no women in ballgowns running through fields of grass, or lustful scenes of sweaty models. Siriano is not selling sex or glamour, but a powerfully political message that is both timely and in line with his historically inclusive and empowering brand. The designer explains, “I wanted to develop a scent that all people could wear that would make them feel confident, inspire them to celebrate themselves as well as empower them to speak up for issues that they feel strongly about.” It’s a fragrance for all, because all of us are beautiful and deserve to be seen.

It’s his relentless commitment to equality and empowerment that has made Siriano a favorite in the fashion world. In an industry where countless designers default to the status quo—straight size designs for impossibly tiny models and celebrities—Siriano has picked up the gauntlet when it comes to providing functional and fabulous clothing for all body types. Comedian Leslie Jones became his biggest fan back in 2016, when he came through in the clutch, custom-designing her a gorgeous red gown for the Ghostbusters premiere after she was neglected and body-shamed by other designers. The experience inspired Jones to pen a lovely tribute to the designer early this year, when he was named one of Time’s most influential people.

The new fragrance only further proves that diversity and representation are more than just a trend in Siriano’s eyes. In addition to actress Danielle Brooks, who fiercely advocates for the curvy and plus-sized, the promo image also includes black and bisexual Muslim activist, Blair Imani, and transgender beauty blogger Gigi Gorgeous. As for the scent itself, People Are People has base notes of patchouli, vanilla and sandalwood, with top notes of bergamot, pink pepper and black prune, and heart notes of Egyptian jasmine, rich tuberose, vanilla orchid and heliotrope. The unisex fragrance is the best of both worlds—romantic and empowered, delicate and strong—meant to suit the widest range of people.
