We haven’t been this excited for the return of a king since King T’Challa and Killmonger brought black excellence to the screen with the release of Black Panther earlier this year. This weekend there was something else to bring audiences everywhere joy besides leftover candy yams and cranberry sauce.

The official trailer for Disney’s live action version of “The Lion King” dropped and fans everywhere are excited for the beloved childhood tale of honor and betrayal to make it’s return to theaters. The Jon Favreau-directed film is scheduled to release in theaters in summer 2019 and features a star-studded cast including Chiwetel Ejiofor, Seth Rogen, Keegan-Michael Key, John Oliver, Alfre Woodard, James Earl Jones (who narrates the trailer and voices “Mufasa” as he did in the original) and of course key players Donald Glover and Beyoncé Knowles-Carter voicing the characters of Simba and Nala respectively.

If your children have yet to see the 1994 animated film, the live-action version may finally give them some context for memes that feature the famous scene where Simba is held up on the mountaintop by Rafiki or where he and father Mufasa stare over the land and he learns that everything that the light touches is a part of their kingdom.

Disney has had it’s share of hits and misses with it’s roll out of remakes including The Jungle Book, Beauty and the Beast and the upcoming Dumbo (which is giving more creepy than cute with Tim Burton behind the remake). But if anything’s for sure, they’re cornering the market on nostalgia for a generation of viewers whose cinematic memories include VHS cassettes and the TV’s being rolled into classroom for movie time on Friday afternoons.
