Within the last few years, we have seen some truly inspiring programming on television that pushes conventional norms and speaks to more diverse audiences, and a new network in the Urban One family is aiming to continue that trend courtesy of TV One.

The TV network which is home to popular original programming such as Unsung, has just announced the launch of a new channel called CLEO TV. CLEO TV is a new “aspirational lifestyle and entertainment cable network targeting Millennial and Gen X women of color.” Derived from the name Cleopatra, CLEO TV will offer content that goes against the negative and cultural stereotypes of women currently shown on TV, serving up short and long-form programming that reflects the multifaceted diverse interests of these generations.

CLEO TV is committed to providing multicultural young women a destination for content centered around travel, home design, relationships, finances, cooking, talk shows, movies, docu-series, sitcoms and more. The network will be broadly distributed on Comcast Xfinity beginning January 19, 2019. Additional affiliate distribution agreements will be announced in the coming months.

TV One General Manager Michelle Rice spoke about the importance of a network like CLEO TV and how she hopes it will become a go-to destination for an audience that is underserved:

“We’re at a pivotal moment in history where women are making a huge impact in our society and culture, especially women of color. CLEO TV will offer a diverse mix of lifestyle and entertainment content through the unique lens of Millennial and young Gen X women of color, an audience segment currently underserved. CLEO TV will leverage the comprehensive media platform of our parent company Urban One, Inc. which includes digital, television and radio divisions that will each play an integral role in bringing this new network to the marketplace.”

The best part about CLEO TV’s launch is the host of new programming that viewers can look forward to. The first wave includes a variety of series touching on comedy, home design, food, and dating.

  • New Soul Kitchen is a cooking show that will feature culinary superstars like Chef Jernard Wells and vegan chef Porsche Thomas prepare soul food recipes with a healthy twist.
  • Harlem-based Chef JJ will chop — and chew — it up with celebrity friends and influencers on Just Eats With Chef JJ.
  • Launching in the second quarter of 2019 is the series Living By Design With Jake and Jazz. Hosted by brother/sister duo Jake and Jazz Smollett, the pair will team up to transform the living, work and play spaces of millennial families.
  • Two travel series are also in development and slated to launch in Q3 of 2019 — a travel and culture guide for Black millennials and a series centered on adventure travel.

CLEO TV also acquired the scripted digital series Everything I Did Wrong In My 20’S, which follows a 35-year-old woman named Stephanie who’s determined to learn from the mistakes of her past in her pursuit of happiness.

Finally, The Unwritten Rules, based on the book “40 Hours and an Unwritten Rule,” will be a comedy series that chronicles the experience of Racey, a young, opinionated woman who discovers she is the sole Black employee at her new job.

Additional programming in the works includes popular web series that will reflect the variety of experiences Black millennials have from adulting drama to dating struggles.
