(Crain’s) — Meltzer/Mandl Architects has a new partner.

Last month David Carpenter became one of very few African Americans to achieve that rank within a New York architectural firm. In fact, he’s one of only 1,775 licensed African-American architects—about 1% of the total—in the entire nation, according to the directory of African-American architects.

At Meltzer/Mandl, the 46-year-old Mr. Carpenter is now one of only two partners at the firm, which focuses on multi-family housing, including affordable housing. The plan is for him to concentrate primarily on bringing in new business, a daunting task in the current economic environment.
