Mary J. Blige And LL COOL J’s Wife Simone I. Smith Host Empowering “Night Of Sisterhood”
Recently, some of Black Hollywood’s most celebrated and powerful women came together to celebrate the importance of sisterhood among black women—and it was all thanks to superstar Mary J. Blige and LL COOL J’s wife Simone I. Smith.
Held at Harriet’s atop the 1 Hotel West Hollywood, ‘A Night Of Sisterhood’ was attended by some of our favorite black women, including Angela Bassett, Nicole Ari Parker, MC Lyte, Malinda Williams, Vanessa Williams, Cookie Johnson, Vanessa Bryant, Marianne Jean-Baptiste and Tina Lawson. While the necessity and importance of sisterhood was the main focus that brought together such an impressive list of women, ‘A Night Of Sisterhood’ was also about the launch of the new joint jewelry line from Mary J. Blige and Simone I. Smith, called Sister Love.
Discussing how difficult the world can be for women to navigate and how your sisters can be that welcomed shoulder to lean on in tough times, Blige was all about women supporting each other. “The world is so hard on women, so it’s a beautiful thing for us to have women in our lives,” Blige told Nischelle Turner of Entertainment Tonight, who led the evening’s conversation. “If we can be here for each other, for real, the way we are right now…this is what Sister Love is about.”
Blige and Smith’s long friendship dates back several years to when Smith essentially saw Blige in her superstar element at the annual Essence Fest and told her how much she loved her, thus a true friendship (and now partnership) was born. The duo’s first jewelry collection launched this past July with the popular collection Queen Hoops, which was very well-received by fans.
“A lot of the designs are a throwback, with a twist,” Blige stated regarding the latest collection. “This is our culture. When we were growing up, we got dressed and knew how to be fly, for cheap. There are a lot of women out there who either have to pay for the babysitter or pay for the earrings. We want you to be able to get the earrings [and pay the babysitter], so you can look fly!”
It was a beautiful evening for all who attended, and each guest was presented with a special gift from the Sister Love collection, a pair of the currently sold-out earrings called Bam Beauties, which will be available to order again on November 6. A portion of proceeds from all jewelry sales are donated to the American Cancer Society, where Smith serves as a global ambassador after successfully beating her own bout with the disease back in 2004.
