You Can Finally See Frozone’s Black Wife…Just Not Fully Animated

A couple of months ago, before the release of the long-awaited sequel to The Incredibles, we wrote a story about Disney’s decision not to show Frozone’s wife—the only Black woman in the entire movie.

As we mentioned before it was a problem because while Mrs. Incredible was a fully fleshed out character, with a range of emotions, Honey—Frozone’s wife spends all of her time nagging him…or at least that’s what we hear.

We would have never known about the decision not to animate her if it hadn’t been for the rationale director Brad Bird offered about their decision not to show her.

“She’s funnier as a voice. We actually went through all the trouble of designing a character and the design appears in the movie but not as Frozone’s wife. We have used her design and she is a hero but there’s not a lot of screen time though.”

But now that the DVD for The Incredibles 2 is set to be released soon, Bird talked about Honey and the scene she would have been in, in the film.

In it, Frozone is looking around frantically for his suit. And because Honey doesn’t want him to go and fight crime, she hides it in various places throughout the house. It’s cute but as Bird says it disturbed the momentum of the action scene.

“We felt like we A) stayed away from the big action scene too long and that we were killing the momentum we were gaining by having the big action scene. And B) we also ultimately decided the off-cameraness of it was part of the joke and then Honey can be kinda anyone you imagine her to be.”

He’s right. The scene is slowed down by her presence. Still, with the lack of Black female characters in animation, it’s a shame a bit more thought didn’t go into featuring her or another Black female character in this film.

But you check out the sketches and animation of Honey in the video below.
